Can too much phosphorous cause itchy skin for patients on dialysis?
Yes. An excess of phosphorus in the blood can lead skin to feel itchy.
The excessive phosphorus can also pull calcium from the bones, causing
fractures. Processed foods are usually high in phosphorus and they should be
avoided. If the patients take the dialysis, they should work with a dietician to
manage dietary intake of phosphorus.
There are medications called phosphate binders that may be prescribed to help
absorb phosphorus from the food and make it pass through the body without being
absorbed into the bloodstream.
If the patients are in the kidney failure stage, the condition is not easy to
reverse.
The Renal Data System ranks the top causes of kidney failure as follows:
1. Diabetes (43.8% of new cases of kidney failure)
2.Other causes, combined (17.5%)
3. Glomerulonephritis (7.6%)
4. Cystic diseases (2.3%)
5. Urologic diseases (2.0%)
6. High blood pressure (26.8%)
